‘Sir, I can’t sing’ is a frustratingly common phrase I hear from the pupils in my school in West London. This definitive statement could however contribute a valuable insight to pupils’views of what may be taking place when engaging in class singing activities within school. Taking perceived views observed in my own school community, I will consider how they aline with literature from the wider music education community and suggest observations regarding views explored and more widely adopted priorities. My intention for for this discussion is to explore how to develop a pedagogy for teaching music appraising at key stage 4 that engages students of all musical backgrounds, musically. I will outline my rationale for doing so, before drawing on the the planning, teaching and evaluation undertook in order to complete this action research project. In this essay, I intend to discuss the implications of the sociology of music and music education literature for congregational church singing. Congregational singing has, and continues, to play a central role in human ritual and ceremony (Turino, 2008). I intend to begin by constructing a framework within which we might view this activity.
